Cockpit Arts, an award winning social enterprise, is hosting the Summer Open Studios in Deptford this weekend.

The organization, founded in 1986, provides studios, facilities, advice and other services to “designers-makers”, all of whom have a craft-based practice. Over 170 jewelers, ceramicists, glassblowers, silver smiths and other designer-makers will be opening their doors to the public this weekend.

The family friendly event will include a children’s textile workshop, along with live craft demonstrations. Laura Adburgham, for example, will be hand weaving in her studio. The event also highlights a special showcase selected by leading gallerist Sarah Myerscough, featuring future collectables, wearable art and conceptual craft works.

Guitar luthier Alex Bishop will be playing live music, and food and drinks will be provided by Hand Made Food.

Cockpit Arts’ Head of Business Development, Ellen O’Hara, see this as an opportunity for the designer-makers to forge personal relationships while selling their work to general public.

According to O’Hara, previous Open Studios have garnered a “very positive response”, attracting up to 6,000 visitors. The event takes place twice a year; otherwise, private tours are available by appointment.
