Summer is coming to London and with it arrives the openings of venues tailor made to celebrate the warmer months. On Thursday, The Red Market opened its doors for the fourth year. A mix of street market and garden party, the event is organized by the Red Gallery in the heart of Shoreditch and lasts all summer long. In the once-empty space next to the gallery, Londoners can enjoy the sunny days with sand beneath their feet, beach chairs and with a cocktail in hand. As the sun goes down, the party moves to the dance floor, facing a colourful old bus. The whole scenario looks quite surreal with hipsters and sympathizers soaking up the sun while sitting on a giant cigarette.

The idea of turning an empty area into an urban oasis came out of necessity. Yarda, Red Gallery’s co-owner, explains: “We had this empty space next to the gallery that was being taken over by the gypsies. That’s why we decided to do something with it. We didn’t think if it would be successful but it has been running for four years. People need a nice place to enjoy the summer in the city.” Sun, drinks and food guaranteed the success of the undertaking. Places like these make sure that summer in London is never boring. The Red Market is open Thursdays to Sundays until late August from 5pm. Find more information on: http://redgallerylondon.com/redmarket.
