Two brothers have begun jail sentences totalling 50 years after raping and robbing two sex workers in Lewisham.

Ali Deen, 24, charged with rape, aiding and abetting rape, robbery and possession of a firearm, was jailed for a total of 30 years, while his brother, Basiru Deen, 21, charged with rape and robbery, for a total of 20 years.

The court heard the brothers contacted one sex worker over the phone and made arrangements to visit her address on Sunday 19 January.

The offences took place when Deen brothers along with another unidentified man – police are still searching for – visited her at the agreed address.

Once inside, one of the men punched her in the face and threatened her while demanding she hand over money. Basiru Deen then raped her.

A second woman who was in the house was also raped by the unidentified suspect, whilst Ali Deen held a gun to her head. She was also raped by Basiru Deen.

Basiru Deen then left the flat, along with the third suspect, having stolen cash, laptop computers and mobile telephones.

Ali Deen stayed behind and threatened to kill both women if they failed to do as he ordered, declaring himself as their ‘pimp’.

He fled the property when the doorbell rang and the victims raised the alarm.

Three days later, an investigation led by detectives from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command (SOECA) was launched and Basiru Deen was immediately arrested as a result. Ali Deen was also arrested eventually on Thursday 30 January.

Acting Detective Inspector Jon Summers, SOECA, praised the women for showing great courage in coming forward and speaking to the police about their experiences.

He said: “I believe that one of the reasons the Deen brothers targeted these women was because they thought that they would not report what had happened to them to the police. They believed that these vulnerable women could be targeted for rape and robbery and the police would or could not help them.

“They could not be more wrong and I would like to take this opportunity to reassure anyone who has been a victim of rape and has not come forward to do so. Regardless of their circumstances, their chosen career paths or lifestyle, the Met will believe you and we will pursue every offender until they are brought to justice.”

The pair were found guilty on Tuesday 8 July following a trial at the Old Bailey and sentenced on the following day.
