Deptford X annual contemporary art festival launched yesterday, entering its 16th year.
“It’s the biggest visual arts festival in the community in the south east,” said Helen Goodier, Chair of Deptford X. “All the local artists in Deptford are putting art out in the public spaces for the community to see.”
When asked about how the festival has changed over the last 16 years, Goodier said: “It’s grown like nothing else. It was started by just one artist. We started small and gradually grew: we’ve got arts funding, local sponsors and all the rest.
“It’s become well-known and we always have a great lead artist. This year Roberta Smith is back – he’s well known in the art world, and also for his views and protests against cuts in arts funding. A great guy to have on board.”
As well as installations and exhibitions the programme features street opera, music, film screenings and even a protest march on the final day of the festival, Sunday October 05.
The festival will spread across 43 venues in Deptford. Get a map and programme at the website, or pick one up from the Fairchild Estate, Creekside.
