Twenty people were forced to evacuate a building after a fire broke out in a block of flats above Tesco Express on South Norwood High Street this morning.

Three crews of six fire engines and 35 fire fighters were sent to tackle the blaze at 9 am this morning. They had the fire under control in an hour and a half.

Contingency crews were used due to an on-going four-day strike over a pensions dispute.

Croydon Fire Station Manager Lee Sparks said: “The fire damaged one of the unoccupied flats on the first floor and part of an empty shop below it. Crews worked hard to quickly bring this blaze under control and thankfully there were no injuries.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
