With the first weekend in December upon us,  what better time to start your Christmas shopping and maybe, just for once, finish early.  This week’s Pick of the line brings you Christmas markets, carols, cinema, opera and theatre to get involved in.

December 6-21 -Hackney Flea-Mas Market

A unique shopping experience starts in Church Street this Saturday.  A selection of stalls, all selling an amazing mix of salvaged, one-of-a–kind, lost and found objects as well as handmade items are available to kick off your Christmas shopping.

December 6 - Christmas Carols at The Geffrye Museum

As a great Elf once said: "the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear," so join The Toots this Saturday as they play Christmas carols through the ages. The service starts at 2:00pm and entry is free.

December 5 – 2001: A Space Odyssey

Nothing says “deck the halls” more than watching a rogue computer hunt down the crew of a spaceship. The 1968 masterpiece, directed by Stanley Kubrick, will be showing at the VUE cinema until December 11.

December 5 – Madam Butterfly

Ellen Kent Opera and Ballet International present Puccini’s opera in three acts about a love affair between a Japanese Geisha and a US Naval officer. The opera is at Croydon Fairfield Halls and Ashcroft Theatre for one night only. Tickets start from £23.

December 6 - Aladdin Shadow Puppet Theatre

Blackheath Halls host a unique interpretation of this legendary folk tale. Suitable for ages four and over you will be transported to a place of mystery, enchantment and strange mythical creatures. Tickets cost £7.

December 6 – Make a Christmas wreath

If you fancy yourself as the next Kirstie Allsop then head down to Brockley Rise centre to make your own Christmas wreath. Using traditional techniques you will create a wreath from fresh foliage, pinecones, berries and ribbons to be the envy of all your neighbours.

December 7 - Spitalfields City Farm Winter Market

The community farm, only a stone’s throw away from the city, offers donkey rides, Christmas trees, winter crafts and activities for all ages with a special appearance from Santa himself!

December 7 – Family Festive Day at Mile End Park

For just one day come and join the staff at Mile End park and visit Santa’ grotto, join in with festive baking and find your creative streak at the arts and crafts table. All are welcome from 10:00am to 4:00pm and entry is free.
