A workman is suffering from serious burns in hospital after his van caught fire in Hackney on Sunday afternoon.

The London Fire Brigade were called to Mare Street at 12:12pm. Four fire engines and 20 fire fighters arrived at the scene of the incident.

Crews from Bethnal Green, Homerton and Stoke Newington were called to the blaze, with the first fire engine arriving within one minute. They removed the injured driver from the vehicle and closed off the street, having the fire under control by 1:27pm.

Police have said the fire is likely to be a result of works being carried out in a nearby commercial property. The ground floor and first floor of this building has also suffered severe damage.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Police could not comment on which hospital the workman is in. The man remains in a critical condition.
