A group of South Norwood residents are making plans to open a new pub designed to benefit the local community.

50 residents who have formed “The South Norwood Community Pub” group feel that the area is lacking a pub that meets the needs of locals.

South Norwood has a very mixed demography, but this is not reflected in the available pubs in the area, according to the group.

There are several pubs in the area but they say these are mostly tailored to those who are interested in football or sports in general.

Rose Bartlett, an SNCP spokeswoman, said: “We feel that there is a distinct lack of a community-focused pub that will reach out to all the residents and offer different activities and entertainment, while also promoting the local community groups and charities that may want to use the space available as a hub for their meetings and events.”

SNCP is putting together a “steering group” that will oversee the steps that needs to be taken. The group will be reaching out to other people who have shown an interest in what they are trying to achieve.

They have found inspiration in The Ivy in Nunhead, the first community-owned pub in London. The pub has had great success since it was established by locals in 2008.

Money needed for the pub will be sourced through crowdfunding.

SNCP said: “There is a real feeling of change and optimism, which is quite palpable when speaking to residents and business owners about our ideas, and this is giving us the boost we need to bring our dream to fruition.”
