Labour Party candidate John Biggs was elected Mayor of Tower Hamlets this morning by a margin of 6,370 votes over runner-up Rabina Khan.
The result was announced shortly before 5am following a second-preference vote count from which all candidates but Biggs and Khan had been eliminated.
Biggs received 32,754 votes with Khan receiving 26,384. In his acceptance speech, Biggs thanked Khan and emphasised that the two needed to be ready to work together.
As she conceded the vote, Khan paid tribute to her supporters and said, “This is not the end.”
Yesterday’s mayoral election was a re-run of the 2014 election, won by independent Lutfur Rahman. Rahman was removed from office in April after the Electoral Commission found him guilty of electoral malpractice.
At 37.7 per cent, voter turnout was down by almost 10 per cent on 2014.
