First vodka micro-distillery opens in Hackney

The first ever Hackney-based vodka micro-distillery Our/London has opened.

Our/London is one of ten distilleries worldwide that produces Our/Vodka, a global brand made from locally-sourced ingredients.

Neil Chivers from the Our/London team said the Hackney branch said it was the company’s philosophy to use local products.

“We use London water which is filtered several times during our process. Our fine wheat-grain spirit, or ethanol, is actually from just outside Birmingham as we found it was the closest place that could consistently provide the quality and purity we needed.”

Founded in Sweden by six entrepreneurs, the Our/Vodka label is part of the well-renowned French distillery Pernod Ricard. Our/Vodka has branches in Amsterdam, Berlin, Detroit, and Seattle, with Our/London being the most recent.

The distillery has its own open open space, between Hackney Central and Hackney Downs, where drinks can be enjoyed while looking into the still. It is hoped this space will become a venue for creative events in the area. Visitors can also attend one of the distillery’s daily organised tours and tastings to learn more about the production process.

Chivers said: “We keep our drinks simple to allow our product to shine through. Whilst we do have a small selection of signature serves such as a raw ginger martini, our bar menu will change depending on the event we do and the partners we have.”

Chivers said the distillery is looking forward to working with other entrepreneurs in the area.

“We are in talks with lots of neighbors regarding potential partnerships, including a fish smoker, a cordial maker, a street art gallery, food purveyors, baristas, bartenders, musicians, designers — you name it. There is lots of potential for partnerships and mutual benefits with local businesses. We are really enjoying building our network and being inspired by our contemporaries.

“We hope that we’ve created and interesting space that will be used for all sorts of creative events and we’ve already started to partner up with likeminded local businesses. In 2016 you can expect to see some pretty cool stuff happening at the distillery.”
