Tower Hamlets Council has been named one of the best employers in the UK for lesbian, gay and bi-sexual staff by the LGBT campaign group Stonewall.

The council was listed at number 30 out of 100, the highest ranked local government entry from London, and also the highest new entry in its field.

The list showcases the best employers for lesbian, gay and bi-sexual staff and is compiled from submissions to Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index.

John Biggs, the mayor of Tower Hamlets, said: “I am proud that Stonewall have recognised the work that we are doing to support cohesion in our workplace and across our communities. Promoting a positive approach to equalities, stamping out discrimination and empowering our residents are responsibilities that we take very seriously.”

Tower Hamlets Homes, a non-profit housing company, also made the list, with a place in the top five for the second year in a row.

Megan Perryman, head of public sector programmes, Stonewall said: “We continue to be inspired by local government, and other public sector organisations like Tower Hamlets Homes, that embrace their diverse colleagues and customers and stand proudly together and continue to work towards equality with one another.”
