Police are appealing for information following a robbery in January in Tower Hamlets.

They want to talk to an Asian man with short black hair of medium build aged between 30 and 40. He is reported to have been wearing light trousers and a dark jacket.

Police were called at around 3.30am on January 24 following a robbery on Old Montague Road, Whitechapel.

The suspect approached a woman in her 30s who was walking with a crutch and asked her for directions to an off licence. They started down an alleyway which is when the suspect pushed the woman to the ground, stole her crutch and her handbag and then fled towards Valence Road.

Tower Hamlets almost consistently had the highest crime statistics over the last three months out of the four East London Lines boroughs with 2399 in January; 2038 in Lewisham, 2135 in Hackney and 2302 in Croydon.

There were 170 crimes in Whitechapel alone in January with anti-social behaviour making up the majority of the total crimes reported. Six robberies, including this one, were also reported during the month.
