Ed Quigley wrote on Twitter: “Armed police and at least 8 cars at an evacuated Lewisham Station.
“I’m told there is a civilian, not wearing much, dancing on the train track singing UB40.”
Charlie Kenward — journalist at the Daily Mirror — also took to Twitter to give some updates about the situation. He wrote: “A man running up and down the station at Lewisham shouting he has a gun. Now been detained by the police.”
A spokesman for the British Transport Police confirmed officers were called to the station after reports of a man on the railway track.
He added that a 32-year-old man was arrested and is now assisting police with their enquiries.
Trains were back on the move by 8.20pm.
