Record Store Day 2017: a complete guide to what’s on near you

With the tenth Record Store Day this Saturday on April 22, we’ve gathered the best places in and around the ELL boroughs where you can treat yourself to shiny new vinyl records and to see special acts performing live. With everything from after parties to Prince LPs on the go, get ready for the best Record Store Day ever!

Once you have found your nearest store, use our full guide below to see what delights they have on offer.

 

Record Store Day 2017

More than 200 independent record stores and thousands of vinyl fans come together each year to celebrate the vinyl music culture of the past and present. The one-day event brings fans special vinyl and CD releases, as well as other surprise giveaways to be revealed at participating stores on the day. This year, there will be two new issues of unreleased material from the late music giant David Bowie. They will be available exclusively for Record Store Day.

Here is a guide of events which will take place in and around the ELL areas. Unless otherwise stated, all the events are free – but get down early to avoid the long queues!

 

Lion Coffee and Records, Hackney

The store which serves you coffee and records has teamed up with record label, Luv Luv Luv Records exclusively for Record Store Day. Check out the performing acts and DJ’s who will be providing sounds throughout the day (the performance times are not yet confirmed – ELL will update as soon as we get the information):

Flashback Records, Tower Hamlets

Like its name, this record store brings you music flashbacks from the past. Since 1997, Flashback Records have been “recycling” music. Expect to find new vinyl reissues, featured vinyl, box sets, CDs and DVDs. See the live acts set to perform exclusively for Record Store Day – and it doesn’t end there, with a Brooklyn Brewery party to finish of the day’s celebrations! The line-up is as follows:

Finish off the day with the Brooklyn Brewery after party, with Hotel Radio at 7:30pm, who will be livestreaming with Slabdragger who describe their music as ‘the good stuff.’ Free refreshments will be provided by Brooklyn Brewery. Listen on Deezer.

Rough Trade West, Portobello market

With stores in London, New York and Nottingham, Rough Trade is on a mission to bring artists and fans closer together. Get down to this record store and discover vinyl music’s most creative and artistic talent. Live performances begin from midday.

Container Records, Brixton

Featured in “Time Out” 2016, Container Records has joined forces with Pop Brixton: a community-based project which supports local jobs, training and enterprise. Together, they will be bringing you Label Market in the main square, with a number of stalls hosted by Bowl Cut GarmsContainer Records, Dream Diary, Le Chatroom, NICE UP! records , Nixwax, SUBMIT, THEM, Tome Records, We Buy Gold, White Peach Records, and more!

BBE store, Hackney

Grab your friends and join BBE Music for vinyl record shopping, dancing and drinking from the The Institute of Light in London Fields. The store will be celebrating two recent special releases from Osunlade~Yoruba Records and Boddhi Satva Official. Following the release of album & book ‘Pyography’ on vinyl, BBE will be bringing you mercurial DJ, producer and ordained Yoruba priest Osunlade~Yoruba Records. Free admission.

BBE store after party, Tower Hamlets

To finish off Record store day, the BBE will be joining forces with London collective 4 to the floor for the after party at the Red Gallery, so get ready to party all night long with some proper real house music, bought to you by the big Funktion 1 sound system at the Red Gallery. Co-headlining will be Boddhi Satva Official. bringing his unique style of dancefloor inspired African music to the party.

Love Vinyl, Hackney

Calling all dance music lovers! This dance store will be offering something a little different when it opens its doors on Record Store Day. The headline act will be Dele Sosimi with his seven-piece band dropping  African sounds, supported with DJ sets from Luke Solomon (Classic), Bob Jones (celebrating 50 years of DJ-ing), Mark Rae (Rae & Christian), EVM128, Pete (On The Corner), Alberto (Cannonball Records), Black Booby, Control Remote & Russell Paine (SDE). The store will also have live sets from Modified ManHolly Holden Y Su Banda lined up.

Food will also be available on the day!

Casbah Records, Greenwich

Also featured in “Time Out” as one of the best shops in London 2013, expect April 22 to be a monster of a day with Casbah Records. Having recently taken over the other side of the shop, the store now has 50 per cent more floor space, which means loads more vinyl from RnB to soul, to rock to electronica and so much more! Look out for an exciting range of exclusive retro t-shirts, along with a special competition and prizes to take place on the day.

Casbah Records also specialise in garage/psych from the ’60s to the “new sounds”, soul/funk and cult from TV/film soundtracks. Chris Pope & The Chords UK – formally a 1980’s mood revival brand, The Chords, will be performing an acoustic set from 3-4pm. Don’t miss it!

Book and Record Bar, Croydon  

If you like books – and records of course, along with a cup of coffee, you’re in luck. The social hub that is Book and Record Bar has it all.  Formerly a pub,  this store is now packed with top quality second hand stock and hundreds of items ready for sale on the day. You’ll be spoilt for choice!
