Detectives in Tower Hamlets are appealing for witnesses following a hit-and-run in Whitechapel that left a young moped rider with critical head injuries.

The rider, 19, was knocked of his bike in the early hours of Friday by a dark-coloured car, thought to be a Volkswagen Passat, on May 26 on Cavell Street, E1.

He is currently being treated at an east London hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Police said the car failed to stop after the accident and continued to speed along the road, heading east down Stepney Way.

Detective Sergeant Mike Stubbins, from Tower Hamlets Criminal Investigations Department (CID) said: “A young man has been left in a critical condition and it is of paramount importance that anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information come forward.

“Anyone who may have seen the vehicle and/or witnessed the collision are urged to get in touch immediately.”

Anybody with further information is urged to call Tower Hamlets CID on 020 7275 4550 or, alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
