Croydon is the second most stressed borough in London, according to health care company Babylon Health, based on analysis of Twitter data.
Their survey of 5 million tweets over two weeks in the US and UK used a tool called TensiStrength developed by an IT professor at Wolverhampton University. Stress levels were ranked on a scale of negative 1 (no stress) to negative 5 (very highly stressed).
1 | Barking and Dagenham | 11.25% |
2 | Croydon | 10.33% |
3 | Harrow | 9.66% |
4 | Islington | 9.64% |
5 | Richmond upon Thames | 9.63% |
6 | Kingston upon Thames | 9.63% |
7 | Enfield | 9.56% |
8 | Brent | 9.48% |
9 | Barnet | 9.38% |
10 | Sutton | 9.23% |

The software was developed by Mike Thelwall and analysed words expressing stress, frustration, anxiety, anger and negativity.
Thelwall said: “TensiStrength’s terms are not only synonyms for stress, anxiety and frustration but also terms related to anger and negative emotions because stress can be a response to negative events and can cause negative emotions.”
The data reveals that the most stressful time of the day for Croydon residents is the evening, and the most stressful day of the week is Sunday.
