Man shot by police in “critical condition”

A man “armed with knives and making threats to kill” is in critical condition after being shot by police in Hackney.

The 28- year-old is in an east London hospital after a confrontation with police where he stabbed an officer. The officer’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Specialist firearms officers were sent to Knights Close, Hackney, following reports of a domestic disturbance. The man was described as “armed with knives and making threats to kill”.

After searching the residence a suspected hand grenade and suspected firearm were discovered. Multiple properties were evacuated as the devices were assessed and removed.

The shooting is being investigated by The Independent Office for Police Conduct while the Metropolitan Police launch a parallel criminal investigation.
