Man’s stand-off with police lasts for 10 hours

Armed man arrested after 10-hour stand-off with police.

A stand-off between the police and an armed man in Croydon lasted for more than 10 hours.

Pagehurst Road in Addiscombe, Croydon, was placed on lockdown after the man threatened to kill people while claiming to have a gun.

Homes and businesses were evacuated, schools were on lock down and people were urged to stay away from the area.

The area was cordoned off from 9:30am until 7:00pm on Tuesday.

The man was in a car that was surrounded by emergency services and a police helicopter above the scene.

A statement released by the Croydon Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at 08:32hrs on Tuesday, 19 March, by a man who made threats to kill.

“Officers attended Pagehurst Road near the junction with Addiscombe Road in Addiscombe.

“A 32-year-old man was found in a car at the location and when approached, he intimated he had a firearm.

“Armed officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene.”

The statement continued:  “The man was arrested approximately 18:30hrs on suspicion of making threats to kill.

“The man has been released under investigation in connection with the offence and is currently receiving medical treatment at south London hospital.”

No one was injured in the arrest.

The statement also said that no firearm was found and that no schools in the area were affected by the incident.
