The emergency department of Croydon’s biggest hospital has reopened after a fire on March 5 caused nearly 100 patients to be evacuated.

Services at Croydon University Hospital’s A&E department were restored at 10am on March 6 after having remained closed since the fire broke out at around 3pm on March 5.

One room inside the hospital was destroyed but there were no injuries, according to the London Fire Brigade.

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust said: “We are pleased to confirm that the fire in the Emergency Department at Croydon University Hospital on 5 March was quickly put out and contained to only one clinic room.”

“Once again, we would like to thank the London Fire Brigade for their fast response who, along with our staff, helped to ensure that all of our patients and staff stayed safe and no one was harmed.”

They added: “Our teams… have worked throughout the night to thoroughly clean and repair the affected areas and we were able to safely reopen our doors to the public earlier today [March 6] to resume full patient care services as normal.”

According to the Evening Standard, the police had confirmed a 53-year-old man was detained under the Mental Health Act at the scene. ELL is working on verifying this information.
