A man, 30, died on Monday after his motorcycle crashed when it was being pursued by police near the Limehouse link tunnel, causing a road closure, traffic queues, and bus diversions.

The motorcycle with a driver and passenger was being pursued by police officers on the A13 Commercial Road during the early hours of Monday morning. It crashed into railings while travelling at high speed.

One man, 30, was declared dead at the scene after unsuccessful attempts by police officers and paramedics to save his life. Another man, 29, was taken to the hospital for an assessment which showed he is in a non-life-threatening condition.

The Metropolitan Police said the incident was being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct as is normal in such circumstances.

The statement reads: “The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. They have advised that they will be conducting an independent investigation.”

The incident caused major traffic queues through the Limehouse Link Tunnel as the enforcement carried out an investigation that took place between A1261 West India Dock Road and Salmon Lane. This made A13 Commercial Road closed and bus routes 15,115,135,559 and D3 operate on diversion.
