Support for Hackney’s older residents will be provided at the council’s annual Winter Warmer

The free event offers support for residents of Hackney council homes aged 55 and above, with the council offering complimentary advice, help, and support that might otherwise be inaccessible  to residents.

The event will take place on December 7, from 11am-3pm at Hackney Church, Lower Clapton Road.

Councillor Clayeon McKenzie, Cabinet Member for Housing Services and Resident Participation, said: “This is one of the most eagerly anticipated events we hold. Last year, around 650 enjoyed the first in-person Winter Warmer we had held since the pandemic, and I have no doubt just as many will be there this year”.

Amidst the nationwide cost of living crisis that has impacted millions of UK residents, local council support reaches those members of society who are often overlooked.

According to a survey by the Office for National Statistics, published last week, 91% of people said that one reason for their rising costs is due to food prices. This is unsurprising considering food prices were around 30% higher in October 2023 than October 2021. A rise in the price of energy has also been observed within the past two years, with gas prices around 60% higher and electricity around 40% higher.

The council has arranged the opportunity for residents to receive financial advice from the council’s inclusion team and Money Hub, as well as time to speak to the council’s repair team to keep homes safe and warm over the winter.

There will also be a chance to learn about ways to get involved in the community and enjoy free music, food, arts and crafts, and massages.

McKenzie said: “We all know that the winter months can be very challenging for some people, but there is a wide network of support available. This event is not just a fantastic way to find out more about the help on offer but also to showcase the wide array of activities on offer in Hackney for older people”.

McKenzie urges: “anyone aged 55 and over living in a Hackney Council home to ensure the Winter Warmer is in their diary as it is not to be missed”.
