A man who was tracked down using phone data has been jailed for raping a woman in Tower Hamlets last year.

Delroy Ogiste, 43, of Higham Road in Haringey, was found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court of two counts of rape and one count of strangulation.

He was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Ogiste was arrested after police officers gathered evidence proving he had attacked a woman at a hotel in Bethnal Green in April 2022.

In June 2022, officers were contacted by a woman who told them she had been raped at a hotel in Bethnal Green on April 29 that year.

The woman, who is in her 20s, had been on a night out with a friend when she met the suspect in a fast-food restaurant.

The pair went back to a nearby hotel, where he became aggressive and raped her.

She described the attack as ‘never ending’ and told officers she feared she would never see her family again.

Detectives, who launched an investigation to track down the suspect, used phone data to identify Ogiste and link him to the crime.

Detective Constable Molly Osborne said: “Ogiste is a dangerous offender who subjected a woman to a terrifying and violent ordeal. I am pleased he will now spend a considerable time in prison.

“I have heard from the victim about the impact the attack has had on her and I know she will have to deal with this for many years to come. The sentence handed down will not change this, however I hope knowing her attacker is behind bars will provide some comfort.

“Tackling violence against women and girls is a key priority for the Met and we will continue to do all we can to remove predatory offenders from the streets of the London.”

Tower Hamlets have had a significant rise in sexual crimes. Office for National Statistics figures shows the Met Police recorded 1,127 sexual offences in Tower Hamlets in September 2022.

This figure is up from 927 during the previous 12 months in 2021 and the highest number since records began in the year to September 2007.
