A woman in her 40s has died in a fire in the five-story Nisbet House on Homerton Street in Hackney.
About 30 fire fighters and six fire engines from Stoke Newington, Leyton, Homerton, and surrounding fire stations attended the fire in the morniung of January 6.
The fire damaged part of the floor of one of the ground floor flats, and the victim, who is yet to be named, was found in the flat.
A Met police spokesperson said: “Her next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. An investigation is under way to establish the cause of the fire.”
The Met Police and London Fire Brigade are investigating the fire, but the cause has been ruled as not suspicious.
This came on the heels of another fire that took place two days earlier in a flat above a shop on Wells Street in Hackney.
About 40 firefighters and six fire engines were called to the scene from Bethal Green, Stoke Newington, Shoreditch and Homerton at around 15:59 pm, and the fire was contained at around 16:53.
About half of the flat was damaged, according to the London Brigade, and though no casualties were reported, an unnamed man who had left the building before the Brigade arrived was treated at the scene by the London Ambulance Services.
The cause of this fire is believed to be due to the unsafe disposal of a cigarette.
The London Brigade spokesperson said: “We’d rather you didn’t smoke, but if you are a smoker, it’s vital you ensure your cigarette is out when you’ve finished smoking it.” “If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy properties but also cost you your life.”
