Goldsmiths student charged with murder after death of fellow student

A student at Goldsmiths, University of London, in Lewisham has appeared in court accused of murdering a fellow student. 

Joshua Michals, 24, an American citizen, of Deals Gateway, Lewisham, was charged with murder appeared at the Old Bailey on Wednesday.

He is accused of the murder of Zhe Wang, 31, a Chinese national, in Manor Park, Lewisham on Wednesday March 20. She was also a student at Goldsmiths.

Police were called to a property in the area at 23:15 over reports of a stabbing. Ms Wang died at the scene.

In a statement, Goldsmiths said: “We can confirm that a student called Zhe Wang has died, and another has been charged with her murder. We have reached out to Zhe Wang’s family, and we are providing support for her friends. 

“Given this is now a matter for the courts, we do not plan to share anymore details with our community at this point.”

Michals is due to return to the Old Bailey in June and a trial date has been set for January 2025.
