Eight Lewisham businesses were recognized for their contributions to the community at the Mayor of Lewisham Business Award Ceremony last night.

The event, which was held in Deptford restaurant Buster Mantis, was an opportunity to promote and celebrate Lewisham’s small businesses, which Mayor Damien Egan called “the vibrant heart of the community.”

A record number of nominations were received, and a panel of judges made up of business advisers and Lewisham business owners determined the winners based on the impact made to the community, specific to each category. Speaking to Eastlondonlines, Egan said that he hopes to expand the ceremony in future years by including greater community involvement, and broadening the nomination process.

Councillor Joe Dromey presented the “Best Investing in Skills Award” to i2 Media, a research and strategy consultancy focused at the intersection of psychology and technology led by Jonathan Freeman, professor of psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, in New Cross.

Speaking to Eastlondonlines, Dromey said: “It is really important having businesses that invest in their workforce and give them opportunities to develop and progress, and i2 Media are a really good example of that. They work with Goldsmiths and they use people coming out of university as well, giving them work experience as well as internships, and they do really impressive stuff with technology.”
