A man has been charged with the murder of Yasmin Begum, who was fatally stabbed in Bethnal Green last week, while her children were at school.
Forty-year-old Quyum Miah from Homerton, Hackney, appeared at the Old Bailey on a video link from Pentonville Prison. He is also charged with burglary and two counts of fraud by false representation. He was remanded in custody and his plea hearing was set for June.
The alarm was raised by school staff last Thursday after the 40-year-old woman had failed to pick up her children.
Police officers then found the woman with stab injuries in Globe Road, where she was pronounced dead at the scene. Cause of death was identified as multiple sharp force injuries.
Detective Chief Inspector Laurence Smith, leading the investigation, said: “It is heart-breaking that yet another woman has been killed. All women and girls have the right to feel safe, at any time, day or night, in public or at home. Tackling violence against women is one of the Met’s top priorities.”
Smith said: “We will continue to carry out door-to-door enquiries and local people will also see additional police in the area.”
Police are still appealing for witnesses to the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101 quoting CAD 4738/24Mar.
