Could this be the most dangerous section of road in Hackney?

Nearly ten accidents occur every year in just a 0.2 mile section of Seven Sisters Road in Hackney making it possibly the most dangerous stretch of road in the borough, according to data analysed by Eastlondonlines.

Department for Transport data showed that over the last five years, there have been 50 accidents happening in the area of Seven Sisters Road between Finsbury Park Road and Queen’s Drive. The road forms the north west boundary of Hackney with Haringey and runs from Finsbury Park towards Tottenham.

Data analysis shows that this section of the road has an abnormally high density of fatal, serious and slight accidents.

Transport for London (TfL) has designated Seven Sisters Road as a “red route”, meaning that it is subject to more restrictions than other roads and that TfL is responsible for its safety.

TfL told Eastlondonlines that they are restarting to work on a safety enhancement programme with the government. A spokesperson said: “We have also identified areas across London that could benefit from changes in speed limit, and are now working to lower speeds on 220 km of our roads across inner and outer London by 2024, including this section of Seven Sisters Road.”

There have been two fatal accidents within two months on this stretch of the road. A motorist died in July 2019 and a pedestrian was killed in September 2019, both having been hit by a vehicle.

“Awful scene yet again. Seven Sisters Road fully closed for a very serious collision. Changes to this disastrous layout cannot come some enough.” Jono Kenyon, a campaigner for Hackney Cycling, tweeted after the accident in September 2019.

Lia Collier, a visitor to Finsbury Park next to Seven Sisters Road, told ELL: “There was a time when we were just trying to get on the other side of the road, and the cars were going so quick that there literally was no chance to cross the road, and we had to run because the Uber was going to leave and we almost got hit by a car.”

Taymiyah Vermont, a friend of Collier, said:”(It is) very hard to cross it. There’s literally just one crossing. Why’s on this long road just one crossing?”

“There’s a barrier on one of the streets… I think that adds more congestion because there are so many cars that have to… go around because of those black barriers that are literally across every single street.” Vermont said.

Junior Barber, a hairdresser at Jonnie’s barbershop on Seven Sisters Road, told ELL that some smaller streets have been closed to encourage people to take public transport.

According to Barber, street closures have forced cars to drive onto Seven Sisters Road, making the road even more congested.

Transport for London (TfL) did not respond to requests for comment.

Hackney has an average of 875 road accidents per year, whereas the average for London is 740, data from Department for Transport shows.
