A new planning application for a Sainsbury’s at Wilmer Place, Stoke Newington has been submitted to Hackney council, a month after the previous refusal.
A spokesperson for Newmark Properties said: “After carefully considering the reasons for refusal we have submitted a revised application to Hackney Council which aims to fully address the issues raised.”
The three main issues with the old application were the impact on the local character of the Stoke Newington Conservation area, the possible harm caused to the natural habitat within Abney Park Cemetery and the imbalance of affordable family housing units within the development.
The new application proposes to set the development several meters further away from the Abney Park Cemetery.
The design of the building has also been amended “to make it calmer”.
More family units have also been introduced.
Nick Perry, Chair of the Hackney Society and campaigner for Stokey Local said: ”The developers do not stand a better chance now.”
The previous application fired a controversial debate within the local community. Perry said the proposed development was “the monster that we do not need.”
Stokey Local will be launching the new campaign once the planning documents are submitted in full on the Newmark Properties website.
The new Stokey Local campaign will target the updated points from the new planning application.
The developer said: “Newmark Properties remains passionate about the project and the regeneration benefits it will bring to Hackney residents and to the Stoke Newington area.”
The council application is now open to public comments, which can be submitted until the June 17.
