The condition of a 27-year-old man shot during an incident at a festival on London Fields on Saturday afternoon is improving. He was taken to hospital after receiving what is believed to be a gunshot wound. This followed a fight breaking out adjacent to London Fields where an all-day festival was taking place.
The aftermath was captured in pictures because of the number of people with their own media recording facilities who were taking advantage of the glorious summer weather this weekend.
The Parks for Life festival is taking place across Hackney borough’s parks and gardens and the shooting took place against the backdrop of cricket being played, cookery demonstrations, gardening and free swimming
lessons at the nearby lido.
The injured man was first reported to be critical but his condition has improved and his wound was not considered life-threatening. It was believed he was an innocent bystander caught in cross-fire.
The Mayor of Hackney Jules Pipe told the Press Association:
“Despite this very worrying incident, hundreds of people were able to enjoy the event in London Fields today safely and without interruption. Thankfully the incident took place some distance from the event, but if anyone attending did witness anything or has any information, I would urge them to contact the police.”
I was there and there wasn’t enough police to avid this trgyc event. The Mayor of Hackney doesn’t really sounds moved with his declarations. The park was packed with children and nobody was there to prevent a armed clash between the gangs. Ridiculous!
I am tired of hearing excuses for this kind of behaviour. The people whop do it know that it is wrong but carry on because there is not a tough enough response from either the authorities or other members of the public. I was brought up in a deprived area and am the product of parents who had a violent relationship fuelled by alcohol abuse – I have not once behaved badly or threateningly in a public place and have certainly never knifed, bottled or shot anyone. take them off the streets for a good long time and if necessary for good so that the majority who are decent people including my children can live safely and peacably.
I am shocked at the Mayor of Hackney’s response, he doesn’t show any concern for the victim. The point is not that ‘hundreds of people were able to enjoy the event in London Fields today safely and without interruption’. The point is that SOMEONE WAS SHOT
